The Harbour Authority has produced a draft ‘Fishing Strategy for Cardiff Bay’ in partnership with the Environment Agency and local fishing groups. This document will provide the basis for consultation with the Harbour Authority’s stakeholders, developing the existing relationship with the Environment Agency and local fishing clubs, and ensuring that fishing facilities and services are provided for the benefit of all. The stakeholders to be consulted will include other Council Service areas, public and regulatory bodies, local angling clubs and angling organisations, wildlife and conservation groups, and local resident committees.

The involvement of a wide range of organisations and individuals in the preparation of the Fishing Strategy is essential to gather the full support of the Harbour Authority’s stakeholders. This will facilitate progress with the various projects and plans outlined in the strategy and help to develop and sustain Cardiff Bay as an exceptional venue for sea, coarse, and game angling.

If you have any comments or queries regarding the fishing strategy please forward them via e-mail to seaves@cardiff.gov.uk or to the address below;

Salmon Since 1989, the Environment Agency (and its predecessor organisation the National Rivers Authority) have undertaken an extensive monitoring programme to determine the impact of the Barrage upon migratory fish.  These are fish species that live at sea, but return to the rivers they were born in to spawn, i.e. Salmon and Sea Trout. The on-going programme comprises various monitoring activities including:

Trapping of fish at Blackweir and Barrage fish passes

Radio tracking of fish

Assessment of angling success

Re-conditioning of kelts

In addition, the Environmental Agency also releases 50,000 salmon smolts into the River Taff every year as presumed mitigation with respect to the construction of the barrage. The need and extent of this programme will be re-assessed as a result of evaluating the data from the long-term monitoring programme. These smolts are reared at the Environment Agency’s fish hatchery at Cynrig in the Brecon Beacons.

The Environment Agency also carries out coarse fish surveys on behalf of Cardiff Harbour Authority. These consist of seine-netting and hydro-acoustic surveys. Coarse fish are species that breed and live in freshwater, and the species recorded to date within Cardiff Bay are:

Chub, Roach, Mullet, Minnow, Stickleback, Eel, Grayling, Gudgeon, Barbel, Rudd, Dace, Stone loach, Carp, Bream, Bullhead

The following marine fish have also been recorded within Cardiff Bay:

Grey Mullet, Flounder, Sea Bass, Sand Smelt
